I love this place! I come here often for special occasions. The service is great and the food is amazing. The prices have increased, and the portions are much smaller than they used to be, but this has been happening at all restaurants I've been to lately. With that being said, the food quality and the service is still outstanding and completely worth it.
That was the best steak tartare we've ever had anywhere. Other places make it well, but tbh, it all tastes kinda basic. Beef, egg, cornichon. But here, the contrasts of Dijon mustard, cured egg yolk with the umami of the soya sauce, and the heat of the horseradish, with the hearty but velvety tenderloin - it was just so delicious. It's evident that it's that good because while we were sitting there, the couple next to us also ordered it. And two tables around us also ordered it. Seriously, this dish has people coming back. The mesquite filet mignon was perfectly medium well and hearty. The only constructive feedback was that it could've used a little more in accompaniment, like a potato or cauliflower mash. We did have some vegetables. (We were debating on ordering the Brussels sprouts for more sustenance, but we were saving our budget to order more cocktails.) Nonetheless, we still thought the dish overall was better than Flemings. We'd order this dish again. The mussels and clams were a winner. The amount of chorizo was far more generous than other places that serve a similar dish. And usually other places do bacon or lardons, which are fatty and heavy. Here, the spiciness and smokiness of the chorizo yielded a seafood broth so delicious, we knocked it back like a soup. Ate the whole thing. Nothing was spared. All the drinks were divine and we cannot wait to come back to try more of their creations: - The Postcard from Japan was spirit forward, and surprisingly, yes, you can taste the black sesame in the whiskey. The sherry was a good addition to cut the whiskey so it's a little more approachable. - The Lincoln Ave was surprisingly spirit forward though it looked like it's all juice. I never thought of pairing bourbon with juice. (Tea, maybe. But definitely, not a fruit.) But I'm a sucker for passion fruit, and I was pleasantly surprised that it yielded a refreshing combo. - The French 75 was, in my gin-biased opinion, was the perfect cocktail for me. The elderberry is subtle but not hidden by the lemon. Distinct in flavor profile and definitely memorable. I would've ordered another but I guess I should be a responsible adult. - The Pinot Noir Côtière was a true Pinot. Light bodied, could drink on its own, yet having enough depth without getting it confused with a medium-bodied Merlot. Whoever selected the wines knew what they were doing. We really appreciated the selection. We paid our compliments to the chef. We're definitely coming back. Me and my partner are two easy going, low key type of guys. So when we were talking to the staff, we came to find out in the near future, there's a good chance they'll start doing happy hour. Hands down, we're coming back. Because those burgers and fries looked damn fine. (We're coming back though happy hour or not.) So yeah, this place got two loyal customers in us. We're excited to sit at the bar again, and chat it up with the staff too. Sorry I only posted pics of our drinks and none of what we actually ate ... but you know, we're fun like that.
IMHO Good food, nice server, slow service. Our starters included a dozen Miyagi oysters ($46), House made Focaccia ($6), Duck Liver Pate ($17), and Beet salad ($17), and Butternut Squash soup $$14. The guys enjoyed their oysters. The focaccia was super flavorful and yummy. I liked the liver pate, but I felt it should've been softer to cut and spread on the tiny pieces of crostini. Beet salad was good but needed more goat cheese for my liking. Our entrees were the Duck breast ($49), Mussels & Clams ($30), Halibut special ($39), and the BSB Double burger w/Truffle fries ($25). No complaints here, except for the truffle fries. They were over fried and crunchy. I like a softer fry to bite into. I left a majority of the fries uneaten. These "truffle" fries didn't taste any different than regular fries, so I don't understand the truffle part of it. For dessert, we opted for the Chocolate Mousse ($13), and the Vanilla Panna Cotta ($13). The chocolate mousse was served in a small brandy snifter...the ratio of mousse to whipping cream was ridiculous. If you're going to advertise a chocolate mousse, the snifter should be filled 3/4 full with 1/4 whipped cream topping, not the other way around. This was my first panna cotta, and the portion was more equitable than the mousse. I didn't taste any vanilla, but it was okay. Service was slow due to the fact that our server was responsible for our whole room. Not her fault. Pluses: there is a dedicated parking lot for patrons. In the morning, the restaurant becomes Stacks for breakfast fare! Will I return? Maybe.
I've come here before several months ago. The food was good, and the service was up to par hence why I chose to come back here for a special occasion. We got here a little earlier for your typical dinner. The ambiance was good. Servers bustling about, and patrons chatting. The volume of the place was comfortable. The food: overall, the food was good, not great. I wasn't blown away but I was pleased ultimately. We got the focaccia, duck liver, duck, and pork chops. Everything was up to par. The duck was a bit overcooked but it's not uncommon for it to come out a little more done than requested. The star of the show was the duck liver. The mustard, onions, jam, and liver really came together in a lovely way. Well done on the pairings. Service was great. Our goal with this visit was to be able to sit down for a meal without being rushed and we were able to. Great service with the entire staff helping out and our server coordinating things masterfully. A lot of places in the bay love to rush folks, here wasn't the case. Well done! Overall, the food was good, and service was great. They've changed the menu so a lot of the items on Yelp are no longer available (beignet, manresa bread, etc). That was frustrating and disappointing but hey, can't stifle change I guess. Except, bring back the beignet please! Would recommend to anyone looking for a good dinner where you won't be rushed and can enjoy your wine and meal.
Came for Mother's Day dinner as a party of 10. Greeted promptly and seated to our table. Service was friendly and attentive for our large group. We enjoyed: Manresa bread Duck liver mousse Escargot Sautéed mushrooms Duck breast Filet mignon Pork chop BSB double burger Striped bass Desserts: Lemon panna cotta buttermilk beignets croissant bread pudding Pot de creme Drinks: Spring into my step spritz Passionfruit mocktail The Lincoln Ave Portions were generous and everything was delicious. There was variety to please everyone in our group.
Come to celebrate a birthday or a girls night out at Black Sheep like we did! My bets are you will not be disappointed. Located right in the heart of Willow Glen with inside or outside seating, this will soon become your new favorite! The service was so high class, & maybe the best service I have ever received. Everything came out timely, we were given wine suggestions & proper tastings, excellent suggestions for dinner options aside from specials, & lovely commentary. Everything we ordered was nothing less than perfection. Some fabulous favorites were: - Gnocchi: although a small plate, very filling. The sauce is savory; it should be canned & sold. - Burger: sounds "middle of the road," however the beef is so delicious you'll want to come back every Friday. - Chocolate Mousse: paired with the beignets, this small but mighty dessert will offer your tastebuds everything they don't know they needed in the chocolate department. I was very impressed with the wine selection. Of course they have your standard picks of Cabernets & Chardonnays, but they make it very easy to explore new & tasty wines without spending an arm & and a leg. Black sheep has been on my list for a while & I am so glad I finally was able to come!
Sheep Throat The same team that brought us Cin Cin, Lexington House, and Le Mouton Noir (RiP) is a decidedly French Bistro that's been going strong for nearly eight years now (ca. 2015). They've put up some impressive stats, including several Zagat recommendations and multiple "Best of" awards by local publications The Metro & San José Mercury News. With all those awards, why did it take me--the towniest of townies--so long to come try them? Who knows? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The Good: *Fantastic service that's almost on-par with the type of service you'd get at a Michelin-starred eatery. *Pet-friendly outdoor space w/ heaters *Great drink menu with some creative and tasty libations *Manresa baguette is a must-order--especially if you order the scallops but more on that in a second. *Pan-Seared Hokkaido Scallops were utterly fantastic. Great sear on the scallops, which were fresh and delicious, and the concomitant sauce was set, spicy, and so moreish--note this is where the baguette comes in handy to sop up the rest of the sauce. *The Crispy Skin Salmon was just as advertised, and cooked perfectly. The accompanying veggies were a bit on the boring side, but overall, the dish was good, and one can't ever turn their nose at perfectly cooked fish. *Passionfruit Panna Cotta was also fantastic and had the Passionfruit flavor so perfectly that it made me think I was back in Maui. You know the tartness that hits you in the back of your mouth but hurts so goooood... *drool* The Meh: *Reservations via their website only *The pork chop was just OK, but it was slightly overcooked and seemed like a low-grade cut as it was filled with gristle and fat. It's not worth the $$ imo. Soft pass. *Dark Chocolate Pot de Créme was just OK and there was nothing to write home about. The flavor was OK, but nothing special, and the texture was a bit too firm Nowhere near as good as the one from literally right across the street. #IYKYK The Ugly: *Parking along Lincoln Ave can be a bit of a hassle. TLDR: Some fantastic hits and mediocre misses make this an interesting place. I'd definitely like to come back and try some more dishes in the future as the good definitely outweighed the bad.
